Benjamin

Age: 20

Location: Coventry – England

Role: Chairperson

Occupation: Student/ Full Time Volunteer/ Shoulder to cry on

Experience: I am the current chair of the Youth Committee. The role is fantastic its hard work but its such good fun. On a day to day basis I keep in constant contact with the staff to allow the best process of keeping Youth in charge.

I first got into the world of politics and young people when I was fourteen. I now wish to follow a career in Politics and International Development, and have always had an interest in the legal system. As I have found that over the past few years I have grown the relevant skills and experience in this field. At present I am attending college on an access course but before I was a Youth Worker for Coventry City Council. I am former chair of The Coventry Youth Council and remained so for two years. Although most of my more ‘early work’ was on a local basis over the years that I have been involved with over thirty different organisations normally giving speech’s about why young people should be treated just as well as anybody else. I love what I do, I’ve never heard a bad word about what I do, do so its all good!

I joined this project because I fancied a change. I had never been on an international event that was based around the work I do. I think this project will create an insight into a world that we can’t see when we look outside our windows. I plan to use the experience to move forward and to look at how to help and engage people better, not just here but where ever and when ever I feel fit.

The role of chair has led me to represent Coventry Youth on a national level through conferences, meetings, workshops and weekly youth council assemblies. I meet weekly with the Police to discuss issues and have established strong links between the Youth Council and the Police and Coventry City Council. I actively sit at a strategic level to allow Young People a voice in the services we are offered. This work has always been of interest to me and indeed developed through my hobby of Scouting. Moving through the Scouts where at the age of fourteen, I became a young leader of the Cubs and fulfilled the Chief Scouts Gold Award. Again, I achieved Scout of the Year and most progressed young leader. I knew then that leading and being a good role model was my vocation.

I have always had a passion for helping people, but I feel that I could really make a difference if I had the chance and I believe this opportunity really puts this chance forward.

Motivation: ” The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts. ” I believe in people that believe in themselves and I wish to create a better future for my childrens childrens children and most of all enjoy it whilst I am doing it.

The final word: I might be a “little” hard to understand and interpret at times but generally if you take my pen out of my mouth it starts to get a little easier. I like to get things done. I think if you going to do it then do it to the best of your ability and you won’t need to go back and repeat it all over again. Speak your mind. Live life to the max.
